CONSTRUCTION INDUSTRY TRAINING DEPARTMENT:   There has been a directive from Government in the past few years for the Training and Productivity Authority of Fiji (TPAF) to provide solutions to the current dilemma of the skills shortages currently experienced in the construction trades. The Construction Industry Training Dept. (CITD) of TPAF has therefore developed and structured its training programs to address this shortfall which coupled with Government funding provides training subsidies in some of its BCI programs. TPAF’s Building & Construction Industry (BCI) programs strive to produce new entrants to the industry with the necessary basic skills and underpinning knowledge and also semi-skilled tradespersons in the fastest time possible. This however does not take way the fact that TPAF continues to strive towards the producing of quality qualifications and competencies as required by its BCI stakeholders - Construction Industry Council (CIC), Fiji Master Builders Association (FMBA) and TPAF’s Construction Industry Training Advisory Committee (CITAC). CITD addresses training in the following trade sectors Carpentry & Building, Plumber & Sheetmetal, Joinery & Cabinetry and the Wet Trades. These programs are structured in 3 levels which are segregated by the outcomes of the different levels – Basic Skills New Entrant programs (4 weeks) Modular Trade New Entrant programs (4-5 months) Specialized trade programs for industry workers (35hr programs) The CITD training programs are structured with added emphasis placed on the practical components of all programs 70:30 ratio so as to ensure trade competencies are clearly achieved through Competency Based training.
