MECHANICAL ENGINEERING INDUSTRY DEPARTMENT (MEITD)
The Mechanical Engineering Industry Department (MEITD) is a section within the Technical Training Department of the Training & Productivity Authority of Fiji.
MEITD was established due to an increase in the demand for courses relating to Mechanical Engineering. Market growth for Mechanical engineers Because of the need to fully expand the section in terms of market growth arose and more Training Officers were recruited in the process. There were several meetings held with various stakeholders within the Mechanical Engineering Industry around the country and this further solidified or justified the need for our establishment. Included in the reform process was the upgrading of our numerous workshops and Laboratories and huge amounts of funds have been diverted into this area to successfully meet the expansion program which is currently underway.
Our expansion program is still in progress and recently we have developed a few programs to meet the needs of the country as a whole. This is an on-going exercise which we intend to pursue with great interest not only because of the current needs of the industry primarily but also because of the future developments that are now happening around us. One has to look around to realize how fast this world is changing only to realize our vision. The moment we fail to realize this need, the wider the gap will open between ourselves and our competitors in the Training Industries.
Some major work already undertaken:
- Installation of a fully computerized Spray Painting Booth
- Construction of a Computer Aided Designing Laboratory
- Construction of Integrated Refrigeration & Air Conditioning Classroom both at Narere and at Lautoka.
- Purchase of Computerized Automotive Scanner
- Purchase Two LIVE vehicles for Electronic Fuel Injection Programs
- Other Automotive Equipment etc
There are now plans to implement e-learning into the Automotive Engineering Training Sector and work has already started to have it in place by 2008. We have had several meetings within the industry and it is very encouraging to see that the concept has been well received by the stakeholders.
