MARINE & PORTS INDUSTRY TRAINING DEPARTMENT:
The Marine and Ports Industry Training Department has designed its training programs for 2010 with the emphasis on providing firstly pre-employment training for both school leavers and unemployed and secondly to up-skill the Marine industry in the relevant Marine training programs. New entrants are designed to undertake the departments PreSea Certificate training program which provides the necessary knowledge and certification required by all persons wishing to commence on a career at sea. Incoporated into this program are the basic Nautical and Engineering knowledge components plus the 4 Safety Short Courses which are compulsory for all entrants into this industry – OHS @ Sea, Survival Techniques, Basic First Aid and the Basic Fire Prevention and Control Safety certificates.
The up-skilling of current workers in the industry is undertaken by the following training programs which have been endorsed by FIMSA and incorporate STCW regulations–
- Basic Short safety courses
- Deck & Engineer Watch Keeper Ratings
- Restricted Class 6 Master/Engineer
- Class 6 Master/Engineer
- Advanced Short Safety courses – Adv Fire/ GMDSS (ROC), First Aid @ Sea, Prof in Survival Craft
- Class 5 Master
- Class 5 Engineer
- Class 4 Engineer
Apart from TPAF’s huge emphasis placed on the practical nature of such trade skills, TPAF’s capabilities to conduct short course training in the western and northern division is deemed to be one of its major draw cards. However majority of the higher level training will be centered in the Narere campus due to the availability of resources in this centre.
